Lisa Bielawa makes most of musical collaborations

One warm late-summer afternoon last year on
the Lower East Side of Manhattan, a cellist
sat down on a bench in front of a public
library and began to play. No one paid much
attention, but about two minutes later, a
violinist walked up and joined him. Then
suddenly, with surgical precision, musicians
began appearing out of nowhere, instruments
at the ready. Some arrived on foot. Some
stepped out of taxis. A soprano walked out of
the library and promptly started to sing. It
was a moving song on the subject of
nostalgia, full of everyday phrases that
seemed curiously tinged with meaning. "I used
to live on this street," she intoned. "What
kind of place are you looking for?"

The music rang out in bright primary colors,
mingling with the sounds of the city, and
even jaded New Yorkers could be seen stopping
in their tracks with jaws slack. A mounted
policeman pulled up his horse to
listen. After about half an hour, the players
began to leave one by one, as mysteriously as
they had arrived. The soprano repeated a
gentle phrase from a song about aimlessness,
and a French horn boldly underlined the
thought. Then both musicians wandered off
into the city streets, leaving the crowd that
had gathered to stare at a cluster of
deserted music stands. One onlooker expressed
a kind of charmed bewilderment. "Where'd the
musicians go?" she asked. "I went to look for
them and couldn't find them anywhere. I even
looked in the trees."

Musical Scales Mimic the Sound of Language

Throughout history, humans of many cultures

have found approximately the same small set
of sound frequencies musically appealing, as
in the 12-note chromatic scale played on the
black and white keys of a piano. The
frequency of every note occurs in a simple
ratio to those of other notes, such as 3:2 or
2:1.

The Sound of Music - Part 1

Comment. Auroras have been heard for
centuries, but they "shouldn't be." Current
theory restricts auroral activity to
altitudes above 50 miles, where a fair vacuum
prevails, and sound generation and
propagation are impossible. One explanation
for auroral sounds is that intense
electromagnetic waves created by the auroras
sweep through thee observer's brain and are
rendered as sound (electrophonic sound). But
perhaps some auroras reach down lower into
the atmosphere than theory allows.

Hi-tech T-shirt turns air guitar into the real thing

Richard Helmer and a team of researchers at
the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial
Research Organisation (CSIRO), Australia's
national science agency, fashioned the
"wearable instrument shirt" out of an
ordinary T-shirt fitted with an array of
sensors.

The built-in technologies measure the
movements of the wearer, allowing them to
"play" by moving one hand to mimic guitar
chord patterns and using the other to pluck
virtual strings. The shirt is hooked up to a
computer that is able to read the signals and
turn them into guitar sounds.

"Deerhoof play with a primal abandon and
molten group chemistry that remains untamed
since the band's early days. Still, at nearly
twice the length of their previous albums,
"The Runners Four" is more complex and
challenging than anything they've
recorded. This is more than rock; it's a
wholesale rewrite of the rock and roll
dictionary. Deerhoof herald the era of the
defiant DIY album. The Runners Four: a
quartet of racers, chasers, messengers, even
smugglers, gleefully smashing through
outmoded boundaries, bearing gifts of sonic
contraband. This is Deerhoof's magnificent
autobiography."

CDs 'sound better' with fungus
From correspondents in Paris
September 11, 2003
news.com.au
Jones' pet area of research is how signals
can be transmitted through biological cells,
which grow in a so-called "fractal" way, like
tree branches.

He became intrigued by experimental musicians
and DJs who, from the mid-1980s, sanded,
varnished or even slapped paint onto CDs to
create new sounds to sample.

Music on CDs comes from tiny etched pits in
the tracks that represent binary digits, the
"0" or "1" that make up a computer code. The
code, reflected back by the laser in the CD
player, is then processed back into an
electronic signal and converted to sound.

Mutilating the surface, so that some of the
pits are missed, thus changes the sound.

But Jones found that much subtler sounds
could be achieved using fungal or bacterial
growth, rather than scraping or coating the
disc's surface.

This is because these life forms introduce
tiny errors, on a micron on nanoscale level
rather than the far bigger millimetric scale.

In addition, the way fungus and bacteria can
shape the sound in weird ways.

Bacteria grow by cell division, while fungi
grow by branching. Both processes can be
controlled by adding malt extract to the disc
as food.
