The most important thing to remember is that, like choosing red or white with
fish, there are no hard and fast rules. You should have what your desire
dictates. The joy of mass popular mayhem is derived specifically from its
spontaneity: Loosen up! Be creative! No one likes a fuddy-duddy who slows
things down with vague moral qualms & points of order during major civil
unrest. Which leads naturally to our first gentle reminder:

1. Off the vanguard. These 'organizers' sprout magically in the midst of every
uprising, shouting orders and hogging all the credit later. Luckily, they never
shut up, and are thus easy to identify. They're either RCP, Trots or cops, and
in any case no one needs a new boss. Your better revolutions are followed
customarily by a good, cathartic, bloody counterrevolution, and its better to
get it out of the way early...

2. Flying wedges always have right of way. When confronted with the marching
line, please sit down so the Popular Armed Contingent in the back can get a
better shot.

3. Please choose your targets carefully. For every Citibank, Burson Marstellar
& Starbuck's that gets it righteously in the plate glass there's some poor mom
& pop scratching their head, wondering what *they* did. Don't get so carried
away that you lose all perspective: we're going to need *some* of those
buildings.

4. Step A: Barricades. Step B: Molotovs. Like love and marriage, you can't have
one without the other.

5. Gifts of tear gas should be promptly returned, and watercannons make a
particularly poetic target for your new molotovs.

6. Mobility is your friend. There is nothing "yellow" about disappearing
quickly into the woodwork to regather at a new word-of-mouth intersection.
Flanks of men are cumbersome things: scatter!

7. The old Mario Savio
sit-down-around-the-cop-car-with-the-recently-busted-guy-thing is a tried &
true. Symbols are powerful things: get him out, and torch the car.
And most importantly: when smashin' the state remember to keep a smile on your
lips & a spring in your step! Today is *your* day!

"Oh, that's nothing- you should see the demonstrations we have in San
Francisco..."
-George Bush to an apologetic President of Guatemala, after retching on
some blown-back tear gas. Just give us an excuse...
