Based in Alaska, it is a research program designed to study the ionosphere in order to develop new weapons technology. The first ten pages of the book, wherein Helms recounts and seems to accept in nauseating detail, the entire US government account of 9-11 almost made me toss this book out. I am so glad I didn't because what I found after that is a treasure trove of meticulous research, fully supported by actual documentation. That's the kind of research FTW likes. His discussion of 9/11 was just a starting point.

There is an entire secret establishment, already in place and operational, under a rubric called “continuity of government.” This is the heart of the real and very scary truths behind FEMA , domestic prison camps, secret installations like Site R and mount Weather, martial law and a parallel government that operates without congressional supervision, through executive orders. It is the mechanism with which American civil liberties will finally be crushed out as Peak Oil, economic collapse and biowarfare become more prominent in our futures. I have dog-eared so many pages and made so many notes in the margins that Helms' book is now one of my indispensable desk references. At the same time that it debunks so many of the popular right-wing myths of the last decade, it adds well documented flesh to a beast that is just as scary, just as real, and very much a part of our daily lives.
