Spinning The IAEA Report on Iran's Nuclear Program
A new International Atomic Energy Agency
(IAEA) report criticizing Iran's nuclear
program was leaked via the Internet. Although
slated to be made public in early June, US
corporate media seized the opportunity to put
a spin on the report's findings. The Real
News Network's analyst Pepe Escobar provides
his analysis of the day's headlines.

Pakistan and 9/11
On October 1, 2001, did the FBI uncover
evidence that Lt. General Mahmood Ahmed, the
Director of the Pakistani Intelligence
Service (the ISI) authorize the wiring of
$100,000 to Florida to Mohammed Atta
(supposed hijack ringleader of the 911
attack) through Omar Saeed Sheikh (an alleged
ISI agent)?
Why did only a single US press outlet, the
Wall Street Journal website, mention this
connection in the editorial section (James
Taranto writing) on October 10, 2001, saying
it was an "internet only" story - when in
fact it was a major story reported at great
length in the main line Indian press?

"General Petraeus has a very limited area of
concern - the US military in Iraq. With three
words, he confirmed yesterday that his
responsibility isn't to worry about the world
outside of Iraq, or our global commitments,
or the overall war on terror. This is not a
knock on General Petraeus. It is the duty of
the commander in chief to listen to those
whose job it is to worry about such
things. It's clear by following the course
laid out for Iraq, the President is ignoring
those people, and hiding behind General
Petraeus to justify his failure as commander
in chief."

The Death of Intimacy
The Bourne Ultimatum is the latest iteration
of a nightmare haunting the Western
mind. Jason Bourne struggles to wake up from
a trance that has made him into a thing
rather than a person. This theme, which is
echoed in everything from the X Men films to
the Matrix series and their extensive
progeny, speaks directly to the reification
phenomenon we’ve been discussing in this
dialogue. A variant of the Frankenstein myth
from the Romantic era, I suspect this
particular strain first developed in the cold
war thrillers such as North by Northwest and
The Manchurian Candidate when Ludlum first
wrote his Bourne novels. This is also when
the American corporate oligarchy was just
beginning to discover the cultural benefits
of militarization and overt mind control

U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in San
Francisco heard oral arguments in two cases
on the government's warrantless wiretapping
program. The Court will decide whether or not
to dismiss the two cases under the "state
secrets" privilege, which bars the
presentation of evidence in court that could
threaten national security. Lower court
judges in both cases rejected the
government's attempts to get the cases
dismissed.

College Republican Chickenhawks Get Busted
That b.s. about the knee problem got me because I (4+ / 0-)
knocked my left kneecap visibly cockeyed in
third grade and, yes, a flight surgeon who
gave me my pre-AF Academy medical during high
school saw it. He pounded on it for a long
time and then asked, "Does that give you any
trouble?"
I figured, periodic aches notwithstanding, I
could walk on it, so I responded "What? My
knee? No." And I passed my medical exam.
Later, in college (I chose somewhere besides
the Blue Zoo), I told a retired three-star
that little story. He cracked the biggest
grin.
Also, I have a relative who made quite a name
for himself as a naval aviator. He did
something similar about a different health
problem, one that could have disqualified him
from flying status. Instead, he lied through
his teeth so he could fly two tours in
Vietnam.
It's so easy to get around the little stuff
if you truly want to serve.
